GLY is a popular Chicago streetwear brand founded by celebrated painter and independent model, Brandon Carlton. U Gotta Love Yourself has served as a defining principle throughout Carlton’s life. But it wasn’t until 2017 that this principle blossomed into one of the most prolific streetwear brands in existence. 

It didn’t take long for renowned industry leader, Converse, to approach him regarding a collaboration. To bring his vision to life, UGLY joined forces with LOUD. 


APPROACH

Brandon wanted his take on the classic Chuck Taylors to capture the child-like wonder of savoring a piece of candy. He dreamt up cheerful color schemes that invite you to find your flavor of happiness.  After all, what better symbol of loving yourself than the tasty escape of a beloved sweet?

Transforming the Converse called for custom tie-dyeing. 

To create the green-apple-inspired “Sour” low-tops, a vibrant yellow and green dye were meshed together. 


And to portray the hard-candy-inspired “Sweet” high-tops, a cocktail of blue and purple were blended. 


The final step consisted of screen-printing the UGLY logo onto the tongue, and the ‘U Gotta Love Yourself’ slogan onto the outside body of the Converse. 

RESULTS

The results were completely fresh spins on a classic piece of footwear.

After a fruitful first campaign, Brandon felt inclined to add a third flavor. For this pair, chalky pink and faded blue merged together delivering the “Bubble Gum” hightops. 

This casual authenticity is what makes UGLY, Brandon.
